Govt to set up 100MW power plants in north

Rajshahi: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday paved the way for setting up two more quick rental power stations with 100-MW capacity while urging the people not to waste electricity.

“The present government has given utmost priority to reduce electricity deficit and it’s being supplied to houses, business enterprises and factories with a high subsidy. But please do not waste power”, she said.

The Prime Minister laid the foundation stone of a 50 MW public sector peaking power plant and unveiled the machinery of a 50 MW private sector quick rental power plant at Katakhali.

State Minister for Power Enamul Haque, State Minister for Home Advocate Shamsul Haque Tuku and Enamul Haque, MP were present.

Pointing out her government’s plan to revitalise the power sector, the Prime Minister said initiatives have been taken to import power from neighbouring countries. “We have already added 2406 MW electricity to the national grid in the last 34 months and 298 MW power will be added by this month with completion of work of four more plants at Faridpur, Gopalganj, Hathazari and Katakhali,” she said.

Hasina said construction work of 23 power plants is going on, while tender for setting up 28 power plants is under process. These power plants would add 7,945 MW electricity to the national grid, she noted.

The Prime Minister said discussion is underway to import power from India and hydroelectricity from Nepal and Bhutan.

Steps have been taken to extract underground coal to construct coal-based power plants, she said.

She referred to the agreement with Russia to build two nuclear power plants at Rooppur in Pabna district with a capacity of 1000 MW each and said a long-term plan has been taken to generate solar power and promote its use.

Sheikh Hasina said her government is also striving to attract foreign investment side by side with local efforts to raise gas production. Daily gas production has been raised by about 380 million cft after present government assumed office,” she said. She said as the wells have already been dug at Samutang in Khagrachhari, Fenchuganj, Saldanadi and at Sundalpur in Noakhali, gas exploration from these gas fields would begin soon.

The government wants to reduce dependence on highly subsidised oil by raising gas and renewable energy production, she added.

Criticising the past BNP-Jamaat government and the subsequent caretaker government for their failure to generate electricity, Sheikh Hasina said they could not produce a single megawatt power in seven years.

She recalled the atrocity of BNP- Jamaat alliance government on Kansat people in Rajshahi region for their struggle in demand of electricity in 2006, and said, “We saw people’s wailing for electricity from 2002 to 2008 but no solution.” —BSS
