59.82 lakh tonnes potato to be produced in N-region
RANGPUR, Nov 13 (BSS) – The government has fixed an all time record target of producing 59.82 lakh tonnes potato from 3.30 lakh hectares land during the current Rabi season in northern region, official said today.
“The northern region will produce 71.85 percent of the fixed national target to produce 83,26,000 tonnes potato from 4,60,000 hectares during this Rabi season,” Horticulturist Mezbahul Islam Khandker of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) said.
Of them, 30,84,403 tonnes potato, 37.04 percent of the fixed national target, will be produced from 1,70,409 hectares land in all eight districts under Rangpur Agriculture Zone (RAZ), he said.
Many of the farmers have already started sowing early variety potato seeds after harvesting their anti-monga short duration Aman paddies in 1,23,334 hectares land in all eight districts under the RAZ.
Deputy Director of the DAE Mamunur Rashid said sowing of potato seeds will get full momentum with the progress of T-Aman harvest everywhere in the region when the government has taken all necessary steps towards the directions.
Meanwhile, the DAE, BADC, BARI, other agri-related departments and NGOs have been taking steps to provide quality potato seeds and inputs including fertilisers among the farmers to make potato farming successful.
The early variety winter potato may appear in the local markets by mid December because of its cultivation much ahead in Rangpur, Gaibandha, Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Kurigram, Bogra and Joypurhat and other places in the region.
The farmers will bring 53,088 hectares land under potato farming to produce 9,60,893 tonnes in Rangpur, 10,284 hectares to produce 1,86,140 tonnes in Gaibandha, 6,605 hectares to produce 1,19,551 tonnes potato in Kurigram.
They will cultivate potato in 6,246 hectares land to produce 1,13,053 tonnes in Lalmonirhat, 20,418 hectares to produce 3,69,566 tonnes in Nilphamari and 37,525 hectares to produce 6,79,203 tonnes in Dinajpur.
Besides, the farmers will cultivate potato in 10,343 hectares to produce 1,87,208 tonnes in Panchagarh and 25,900 hectares to produce 4,68,790 tonnes potato in Thakurgaon during this Rabi season in the RAZ, DAE officials said.
Agri-scientists Dr MA Mazid and Dr MG Neogi said potato farming could become profitable all the time if adequate preservation facilities were ensured and potato-based agri industries set up side by side exploring more prospects for enhancing exports.
According to DAE official, there are some 331 cold storages with maximum capacities of preserving over 26 lakh tonnes potato throughout the country.
