CHITTAGONG, MAR 20: Industries Minister Dilip Barua has said that the government is planning to create integrated ship building zones to ensure all the necessary facilities in different areas of the country. For proper development of the emerging highly prospective industry, the Ministry of Industry has already started drafting a comprehensive policy for the shipbuilding industry, he added.

He said this while speaking at an advocacy workshop on “Identifying Regulatory Barriers & Improving Transparency in the Shipbuilding Industry” as chief guest at a local hotel on Sunday. International Business Forum of Bangladesh (IBFB) organised the workshop marking the publication of the result of a research on Problem and Prospects of Shipbuilding Industry done by a team of experts of IBFB.

President of IBFB and former mayor of Chittagong City Mahmudul Islam Chowdhury presided over the programme.

Chairman of PHP Group and Vice President of Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce & Industry Sufi Mizanur Rahman, Managing Director of Western Marine Shipbuilding Industry Engineer Shaklhawat Hossain and Researcher and Director of IBFB Dr Omer Shafayet Kawser also spoke at the workshop.  The IBFB advocacy manager delivered the key note presentation.

Replying to the recommendation of the workshop, the industries minister said he would place the proposal of creating a Shipbuilding Industry Promotion Council and One Stop Service Cell for the industry at the Ministry of Industry in the next cabinet meeting.

The policy for the shipbuilding industry will be finalised after discussing with the stakeholders and experts of the industry, he added.

The minister also said the government is very concerned to remove all the barriers to the development of shipbuilding and all other industries of the country to transform the economy into a productive one.

Sufi Mizan said the road to success is always under construction. If we cannot develop the infrastructure of the country the industrialisation of the country will not sustain very long, he added. Shakhawat Hossain said the main barrier to  shipbuilding industry is the high import duty on raw materials and machineries ranging 20 to 85 per cent. He urged the government to set the interest rate of bank lone in a single digit at least for the development of the highly potential shipbuilding industry.
