Khulna shipyard building 5 patrol ships for BN
KHULNA, Feb 23: Khulna Shipyard (KSY) is building five patrol ships at a cost of Tk 2.80 billion and the works will be completed by December-2013. It is expected that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will formally inaugurate the construction work on March 5, official sources said.
Deputy General Manager of KSY, Commander Anisur Rahman Molla, said that this is for the first time that five modern patrol ships are being built at Khulna Shipyard.
The primary construction work of the construction ships started in June-2010. The machinery and equipment have been imported from United Kingdom.
He said the length and with of the ships will be of 50 meters by 7 meters and the optimum speed of the ships will be 20/25 miles per hour. If this type of ship is imported a single one would cost about Tk. 2 billion. Bangladesh Navy will use these ships. Two kinds of guns will be set up in the ships to conduct operational activities. He also said that Prime Minister Shaikh Hasina will formally inaugurate the construction work of the ships on March 5 at 12 noon.
Located on the bank of the River Rupsa, the shipyard was established in 1957 and after the independence, it was handed over to the state-run Bangladesh Steel and Engineering Corporation (BSEC) in 1972. But the shipyard started incurring losses after 1980.
Considering the economic prospect, later on, Bangladesh Navy was given the responsibility of running it on October 3, 1999. Shortly after the takeover under a bailout plan, the shipyard started making a turnaround into a profitable enterprise.
According to sources in the Khulna Shipyard Limited (KSY) company, some 650 ships have been built and renovated while 1,800 repaired at the yard in last 47 years.
The KSY is now able to build modern patrol craft, inland and coastal workboats, harbour/coastal and sea-bound tugs, barges, ferries, landing crafts, crane barges, hydrographic survey vessels, buoy-handling vessels, search and rescue boats, cargo vessels, tankers and other kinds of ships.
Also skilled in general engineering sector, KSY is now constructing electrical tower, trailer, iron tank, oil and water tanks, wagon and machinery used in jute and sugar mills. Besides, it built the newly innovated globe digester for paper mill.
As Bangladesh set foot on the international export market in a latest development in the highly prospective sector, the KSY management said they are now planning to build and repair big ships.
Steps have been taken to set up a forward base of the shipyard in Joymonir Khal area at downstream of Mongla,” said an optimistic DGM.
