72,500 tonnes winter vegetables expected
NARSINGDI, Dec 27 (BSS)-During the current winter season, about 72,500 tonnes of winter vegetables are expected to produce in the district.
Deputy director of Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Narsingdi Abdullah Ibrahim told BSS that farmers of the district achieved huge vegetables production through applying quality seeds.
He said it the favorable climatic conditions prevailed in the coming weeks the above mentioned production would be achieved.
He said a total of 6750 hectares land have been brought under winter vegetables cultivation in the six upazilas of the district in the current season as against 65,00 hectares in the previous year.
Various kinds of winter vegetables like bean, brinjal, cauliflower, cabbage, gourd, radish, potato, sweet potato, lal shak, plong shak, pumpkin and karella etc grow aplenty in Shjbpur, Raipura, Belabo and Sadar upazilas of the district.
Narsingdi district is a vegetables surplus area, usually supply 40 to 50 percent of its production to the capital and other districts after meeting the local demand.
A number of poor families in different upazilas of the district achieved economic self-reliance through vegetables farming during the last couple of years.
